Giant Squid, the studio behind Journey, Abzu, and The Pathless, has revealed its next title. Announced as part of PlayStation's May Showcase, Sword of the Sea looks to be a picturesque adventure game in which players control a blade-wielding character traveling across deserts, ancient ruins, and the sea.

The follow-up to 2022's The Pathless, Sword of the Sea looks like a return to the artistic stylings of Journey for the studio. The brief trailer showcased fluid gameplay, sand surfing, and creatures of epic proportions scattered across a desolate land. Following the showcase, PlayStation shared a blog post offering additional information about the title. In it, Giant Squid creative director Matt Nava called Sword of the Sea the studio's "most ambitious game to date." Nava then shared a bit more about the game's plot, writing:

"You are the Wraith--resurrected in a desolate world and tasked with restoring life to it as you explore submerged ruins and the vibrant, varied cultures within. Surf through sinking tombs, mysterious shipwrecks, and petrified battlefields--and bring giant shoals of fish and creatures back in the process. But beware, this land is also home to massive leviathans that will stand in your way."

Nava also discussed the game's primary mode of transportation: the Hoversword. According to Nava, the Hoversword "controls like a snowboard, skateboard, and hoverboard all in one." Players will have to build momentum to achieve great speeds and catch big air as they "explore skatepark-like ruins, lost in the tides of the Necropolis of the Gods."

The studio has not yet revealed any details surrounding Sword of the Sea's release date.
